IWL News and Events
In 2015, the IWL augmented funds raised by the Eslinger family to acquire a service dog. The current ECAD newsletter celebrates Timothy and his new dog Sky Rocket.
The IWL donated $7000, through the Staten Island Organization Yellowboots, to get Noah Ocasio a prosthetic leg. Our Treasurer, Geri DiCostanzo, personally visited the family on Christmas eve to help present Noah with his gift. The new leg is decorated with his favorite comics and is waterproof. Noah was thrilled to not have to wear crutches in the shower anymore. Noah suffered from complications during surgery that led to his having a leg partially amputated. In May, the IWL took a 9-day journey to the Veneto Region and experienced the roads less traveled. We discovered the rare beauty of Verona, Vicenza, Asolo, Bassano del Grappa, Treviso and Trieste. The last evening of our trip featured a private tour and wine tasting with a sommelier at the Bastianich Winery in Friuli, along with a four-course dinner with wine pairings at the Bastianich restaurant. This special wine and dine experience was arranged by world-renowned chef and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich.

Strangers Extend a Helping Hand to Struggling New Yorkers
By JOHN OTIS FEB. 27, 2016
. . . Ms. Margaret Macaluso was featured in an article in December in connection with the The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund. Hers was the story of a mother devoted to caring for her four sons, whose father died in 2013; working to rebuild a home destroyed by Hurricane Sandy; and fighting an aggressive illness — all with remarkable equanimity . . .After the article about her appeared, the Italian Welfare League gave the Macaluso family $10,000. Ms. Macaluso plans to use the money to buy a second car, which she said she hoped would alleviate some of the stress from the family’s frenetic lifestyle by allowing her sons to drive themselves to work and school . . .
